Many wildlife paintings are created directly on reclaimed barnwood and salvaged timber, letting the wood’s weathered grain and quiet history shape the imagery. Working in an alla prima, or “wet-on-wet,” style allows each piece to be created in a single, fluid session—capturing the immediacy and honesty of the moment. Brushstrokes stay fresh, colors mingle organically, and the energy of the subject is preserved before it has a chance to settle. This spontaneous technique pairs naturally with reclaimed wood, letting the painting respond to every knot and contour as it unfolds.
